Produced on the slopes of the volcano, on the Sicilian estate of the Imberti family, Etna Rosso A Picca A Picca (“little by little” in the island dialect) is made from Nerello Mascalese grapes.
VINTAGE: 2018
GRAPES: 100% Nerello Mascalese
ALC: 13%
TASTING NOTES: With a bouquet of black raspberries in an air of cracked slate, flint, ashen stone and smoke, the 2020 Etna Rosso makes itself known. It’s round and silky, with an initial burst of inner sweetness that’s quickly contrasted by tart wild berries and mineral tones that saturate toward the close.
The vineyards, located in the Solicchiata area in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia (CT), are at an altitude of 600 m above sea level, a characteristic that guarantees excellent day/night temperature variations during the ripening phase, and are exposed to the north/north-east.
The soil presents the precious characteristics typical of volcanic soils, very dark color, predominantly sandy and scarce organic substance.
The average age of the vines is very high, over 80 years, but numerous vines, still productive, were planted at the end of the 19th century, that is, in the pre-phylloxera period.
The grape yield per hectare is modest, reaching just 60 quintals per hectare of very high quality grapes.
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel, to preserve the great aromatic heritage of Nerello Mascalese.
Bottling takes place in September of the year following the harvest and the wine remains in the bottle for at least another 6 months before being marketed.
